The candidate will work closely with support engineers, plant personnel, OEMs, vendors, and senior management to achieve company objectives. He will be expected to lead and manage the routine activities of the Controls Engineering group, with additional focus towards cultivating Controls group retention, training, career aspirations, and professional development. Technical engineering competencies and troubleshooting skills are required, predominately with Siemens gas turbines. Gas turbine performance assessments and control strategy reviews are key factors, as well as control system evaluations for new and existing legacy systems. Primary experience with WDPF, Ovation, TXP, Simadyn, and T3000 control systems. Manage projects related to Siemens controls working with various entities within and outside of Calpine.
Essential Functions & Duties:
1. Function as a hands-on, working manager leading Turbine Controls Engineers who support fleet wide startup and optimization details of Calpine’s Siemens fleet of industrial gas turbines.
2. Simultaneously oversee multiple projects of various scope and complexity.
3. Provide controls support and direction for the Calpine fleet.
4. Compile, prioritize and balance duties/tasks for the Turbine Controls Engineering Group
5. Responsible for following group projects and tasks and providing reports and metrics on group status.
6. Identify and lead the implementation of control optimization and performance improvement opportunities throughout the fleet.
7. Schedule resources including personnel and equipment to meet aggressive development schedules.
8. Lead management activities to institute control modifications/enhancements, including generation of logic drawings, schematics, and technical bulletins.
9. Cultivate, prepare and advise Turbine Controls Engineers and be responsible for their annual performance appraisals.
10. Collaborate and brainstorm control solutions pertaining to the Calpine fleet.
11. Manage external resources as needed.
12. Work collectively with Turbine Controls Engineers, site personnel, OEMs, vendors, senior management, and others as necessary to achieve company objectives.
13. Perform control logic troubleshooting on Calpine’s Siemens fleet of industrial gas turbines and their associated excitation systems.
14. Provide guidance, training, evaluation and assistance with combustion tuning on Siemens gas turbines as well as with new plant startup activities.
15. Develop and/or assess control logic changes on mature gas and steam turbines including leading edge advance controls logic.
16. Audit OEM recommended controls changes and work with OEM in troubleshooting turbine issues.
17. Support PI Historian and project development activities as requested
18. Develop effective relationships with personnel from other entities within Calpine.
19. Manage projects related to SWPC controls working with various entities within and outside of Calpine.
20. Set, monitor and control standards for doing work related to SWPC controls.
Qualifications:
1. BSEE or BSET preferred. Other technical degree may be considered.
2. 2 to 12 years experience with SWPC controls system installation, troubleshooting, or development. (SWPC TXP, Simadyn, T3000,WDPF, Ovation, etc) OEM Field Service or Engineering Service experience is highly desirable.
3. 5 years supervision or management experience.
4. Must have a proven track record in the controls field.
5. Demonstrate adequate technical knowledge of turbines; including generators, operating turbines, and test equipment and test procedures.
6. Must have excellent electrical skills and a strong understanding of turbine instrumentation.
7. Must be willing to be available 24x7 and work varied hours as necessary.
8. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
9. Above average math and computer skills, i.e., Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project), and work with specialized computer programs such as component life tracking database.
10.Have extensive knowledge of SWPC Gas turbine operating philosophy, including troubleshooting problems.Steam turbine and excitation experience a plus.
