JOB TITLE: Mechanical or Ocean Engineer

LOCATION: Waimanalo, Hawaii

Company Name: Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc.

Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. was established in 1973 as a diversified ocean engineering and naval architecture company providing service primarily in Hawaii and the Pacific. In Makais early years, we took a technical lead in a number of innovative projects that helped develop a unique set of skills and expertise. Deep water pipeline design for energy applications, marine vehicles and deep water cable installation software development were some of those projects.

Today Makai''s services have greatly expanded, and we are more global in nature. Our clients are found throughout the world. Makai has developed a broad spectrum of engineering expertise and provides services in research and development, design, construction engineering support, construction management, testing, and systems analysis, cable lay planning, analysis and support and other diverse operations in the marine field. Makai takes pride in providing innovative award winning design solutions to complex ocean engineering challenges. Our personnel have extensive engineering, software development and technical backgrounds and are experienced in working on new and unique projects and in the preparation of comprehensive design documentation, specifications, cost estimates, engineering reports and presentations.

In the last two years Makai has formed a partnership with Lockheed Martin Corporation on the development of the first commercial sized OTEC plant. This is a huge, demanding and exciting sustainable energy project that could have a major near term impact on energy production in remote islands such as Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Oceans. We are actively seeking talented engineers to join our team in this endeavor as listed below.

Graduate Mechanical or Ocean Engineer:

Makai''s design group is looking for talented and fast-learning graduate engineers preferably with outside work experience to fill two positions in Makais design group. Major project responsibilities within this group include design of floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant and design of Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC) systems in selected locations around the world. Within the group, OTEC Design responsibilities include design of large diameter pipe handling equipment, heat exchanger design, OTEC plant configuration design and overall system analysis. SWAC design responsibilities include overall project development, pipeline and environmental loading design analysis, detailed mechanical design tasks and construction management duties.

The two positions require strong mechanical engineering skills. However, graduate mechanical engineers or graduate ocean engineers with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering will be considered. Undergraduate mechanical engineers with at least 5 years of experience in a demanding analytical or design environment will also be considered.

Specific work tasks for one mechanical engineer position will focus on an OTEC task to design, develop a prototype and test of a large diameter pipe deployment (gripper) tool. This work will require an understanding of overall OTEC team project goals, innovative structural design capabilities, analytical modeling skills, background or skills in design of hydraulic power systems, ability to design prototypes of large structural and hydraulic elements and knowledge of instrumentation/testing procedures for prototype testing.

The second mechanical engineers responsibilities will focus on large process plant layout and analysis/design of custom hydraulic modeling. Important components of this work will include understanding overall OTEC team project goals, modeling of large fluid flows in custom designed conduits, understanding of ammonia process piping system design.

Both of these engineer positions will include significant research and design analysis tasks as well as report writing and design documentation tasks. Ability to think and write clearly and be suited to demanding engineering analysis are important assets for these positions. A strong working knowledge of MS Office Software and common engineering analytical software such as Matlab is required, and expertise in Solidworks and/or commercially available FEA programs are desirable skills. An ideal candidate would have an MS in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering and a BS in Mechanical Engineering with experience in a field related to one of these positions or other relevant experience. All of Makais work is in the ocean and is marine related. Therefore, ocean experience, background or interest will be a definite plus for these positions. Candidates should be U.S. citizens or possess a green card. Makai provides competitive salary, benefits and a unique work atmosphere.
